- Electronic Compass / Temperature Readout Not Working
If the display of your electronic compass / temperature display is blank, then
we have the fix for you.
Figure 1 - Overhead Electronic Compass / Temperature
Display
First, make sure that you have not accidentally pushed the MODE button and
put it into the mode that turns the display off. This will save you $19.99
right off. There should be three
different modes...English - Metric - and Off. By pushing the MODE button,
the display should cycle through these modes.
This repair would also apply to the Ford F150, F250,
F350, especially the Lariat edition which typically has this overhead
console upgrade with temperature and compass read out. The Lariat
edition may only have two buttons on it, but the repair is the same.
This repair requires the following tools/supplies:
Figure 2 / 3 - Tools/Supplies Needed:
1. Small screwdriver type blade tip.
2. Torx T-10 wrench (star shaped head...it doesn't have
to be a ratchet like the one above)
- Silver Bearing Solder
- 30 Watt Soldering Iron (Try not to go any
higher than a 30 Watt iron as you could risk harming the electronic components
with too much heat).
This repair requires minimum soldering skills (or learn
to solder with this project).

How to Become the Favorite Son-in-Law...
Hi Duane
Just finished up the Explorer / Mountaineer compass repair as per the
AnyoneCanFixIt.com instructions. No issues what so ever!!!!!! Saved my
father in law $200.00 or more as he was quoted that price at a local repair
shop. I recommend these instructions to anybody. The repair and
reinstallation was quite easy and took about 45 minutes. Thanks so
much!!!!!!

Thank you! $19.99 for the instructions
plus $9.42 for the Torx key set, soldering iron, and solder. About 40
minutes and $29.41 to fix what would have cost A LOT more if I would have
taken my Explorer to a shop to be repaired.
The instructions weren't that hard to follow. And I have never soldered
before!
Again, thank you.

Thank you so much for the directions on how to fix my overhead console
message center on my 2001 Ford F250. What was going to be a very expensive
fix through Ford ending up taking about 30 minutes and the only cost was the
solder.
The directions and illustrations were so easy to complete and follow. When I
had a problem you were so prompt in calling me back. Thank you for taking
the time and effort to share your knowledge with consumers. I will keep your
web site in my favorites!
Thanks again!

Duane,
I completed the repair this weekend. It took about one hour and all went
very well, excellent instructions. The most difficult part was separating
the little white tabs on the module. It just takes a little time and
patients. I used a 15 watt soldering iron which worked perfect. Once
reconnected the digital readout was working as new.
Thank you

Duane,
I used your Explorer Overhead Compass/Temp Display fix and it worked great.
Thanks, and great work.

Duane:
Thanks for the information. I have been without the compass/temp system for
over a year. I took it to a repair station and they said that they would get
back to me with an estimate, they never did.
I didn't want to take the car to a ford dealer for they are very expensive.
Well your fix worked great. Got the job done quickly in less than an hour.
Before I reinstalled the unit onto the car, I hooked up the electrical to
see if the unit worked. When the light came on, I gave a cheer. Now I can
know what the temp is outside and in what direction I am going.
Thanks,
Steve - SCull04@NOSPAMaol.com
