Ford Explorer / Mercury Mountaineer / Villager / Windstar / Nissan Quest

  • iPod / Aux / Satellite Radio Auxiliary Input Adaptor Installation Instructions that allow Steering Wheel Control Functions

Figure 0.3 - Radio from Ford / Nissan

If you have a radio like the one pictured above and would like to add a direct connection for an iPod, MP3 player, satellite Radio receiver, etc., then we have the solution for you.

Here is what you will need...

Figure 0.5 - Adaptor - Axxess Model AIP-FD20-20

I've been using this set up for over a year and I love it. I actually bought my adaptor at Circuit City when they were still an actual store, but now with their absence, I see that you can still order the adaptor online from various locations...just Google "AIP-FD20-ID" and you will get a list of sources. The prices range from about $25 on Ebay to as high as $110...find a place you are comfortable with ordering from, and go from there.  I gave about $70 back at Circuit City when they had their stores...so that should give you a realistic price point to shot from.

If you bought one of these Axxess adaptors and had it "professionally" installed by Circuit City and now you don't have steering wheel controls (and they probably said you can't have both), then these are the instructions to use to get your steering wheel controls functional again AND have your iPod / Aux adaptor (You'll only need the item #4 pictured below, in Figure 0.7, a small jeweler's screwdriver).

Figure 0.7 - Tools Needed for the Job

1. DIN Removal Tools (Available at most auto parts stores or Wal-Mart for about $4-$8...or see the instructions available at www.shareamemory.com/radio/removal.htm on how to remove the radio from the dash)
 2. 7mm Nut Driver
 3. Electrical Tape
 4. Small Jeweler's screwdriver
 5. Scissors

With the above tools and the adaptor, all you will need is the instructions.  These are the most complete and detailed instructions to date...you should enjoy the complete step by step pictures and the added details of how to work with one of the connectors so that you will have steering wheel controls (if you already have that functionality).  This instructions won't disappoint you with their detail and ease.

If you have had one of these Axxess Adaptors installed by a "professional" and lost the use your steering wheel controls, you will want these instructions to get you back with your steering wheel controls.

If you are aching to play your iPod or MP3 player in your vehicle with a static laden FM modulator, then these step by step instructions with detailed pictures will walk you through the complete installation.

Ford Explorer / Mercury Mountaineer / Villager / Windstar / Nissan Quest

  • Electronic Compass / Temperature Readout Not Working
If the display of your electronic compass / temperature readout is blank, then we have the fix for you.

Figure 1 - Overhead Electronic Compass / Temperature Display

First, make sure that you have not accidentally pushed the MODE button and put it into the mode that turns the display off.  This will save you $19.99 right off.  There should be three different modes...English - Metric - and Off.  By pushing the MODE button, the display should cycle through these modes.

This repair would also apply to the Ford F150, F250, F350, especially the Lariat edition which typically has this overhead console upgrade with temperature and compass read out.  The Lariat edition may only have two buttons on it, but the repair is the same.

How to Become the Favorite Son-in-Law...
Hi Duane
Just finished up the Explorer / Mountaineer compass repair as per the AnyoneCanFixIt.com instructions. No issues what so ever!!!!!! Saved my father in law $200.00 or more as he was quoted that price at a local repair shop.  I recommend these instructions to anybody. The repair and reinstallation was quite easy and took about 45 minutes. Thanks so much!!!!!!

Thank you! $19.99 for the instructions plus $9.42 for the Torx key set, soldering iron, and solder. About 40 minutes and $29.41 to fix what would have cost A LOT more if I would have taken my Explorer to a shop to be repaired.

The instructions weren't that hard to follow. And I have never soldered before!

Again, thank you.

Thank you so much for the directions on how to fix my overhead console message center on my 2001 Ford F250. What was going to be a very expensive fix through Ford ending up taking about 30 minutes and the only cost was the solder.
The directions and illustrations were so easy to complete and follow. When I had a problem you were so prompt in calling me back. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share your knowledge with consumers. I will keep your web site in my favorites!

Thanks again!

Duane,
I completed the repair this weekend. It took about one hour and all went very well, excellent instructions. The most difficult part was separating the little white tabs on the module. It just takes a little time and patients. I used a 15 watt soldering iron which worked perfect. Once reconnected the digital readout was working as new.

Thank you

Duane,
I used your Explorer Overhead Compass/Temp Display fix and it worked great.

Thanks, and great work.

Joel Trumble - jtrumble@NOSPAMusa.com

Duane:
Thanks for the information. I have been without the compass/temp system for over a year. I took it to a repair station and they said that they would get back to me with an estimate, they never did.

I didn't want to take the car to a ford dealer for they are very expensive.

Well your fix worked great. Got the job done quickly in less than an hour.  Before I reinstalled the unit onto the car, I hooked up the electrical to see if the unit worked. When the light came on, I gave a cheer. Now I can know what the temp is outside and in what direction I am going.

Thanks,
Steve - SCull04@NOSPAMaol.com

Ford Explorer / Mercury Mountaineer Door Lock Repair

Figure 4 - The Problematic Door Lock

PROBLEM:
The door lock of your 1997-2001 Ford Explorer or Mercury Mountaineer is not operating properly (might work on other years and models too).  If your lock makes a clunking noise, however, it will not open the lock all the way (NOTE:  If it doesn't make a clunking noise from the remote, then you could have another problem not covered in these directions...the door lock must be making an attempt to unlock and you can hear it clicking when trying to open the door).  This usually starts happening occasionally, then it begins doing it all the time in which you cannot use your remote to unlock your door.  You will usually see the lock try to pop up when operating the unlock of your remote, however, it just won't come all the way up to unlock.

Sometimes, you might also have a problem where the door handle has become "floppy".  It has no tension holding it down in place.  This door lock repair will actually fix this problem too (though, you don't have to have a floppy door handle problem to have the problem with the door lock).

THIS REPAIR IS *NOT* FOR A STUCK REAR DOOR THAT WON'T OPEN...I have not addressed that issue...yet.  It is only for the FRONT doors...the rear doors of the 4 door models have a different mechanism and I have not documented a fix for those at this time.

TIME & SKILL REQUIRED:
About a 20 minute job....give yourself another 20 minutes if you are taking your time through the process.  If you can turn a screw driver, you should be able to complete this repair...there is some requirement to pop the door panel fasteners off, but other than that, anyone should be able to easily complete this repair with no mechanical knowledge or background.

TOOLS:

Figure 4 - The Problematic Door Lock Tools Required

1. Phillips screwdriver
2. Flat blade screwdriver
3. Scrap cloth

For no additional charge, with your purchase of these instructions, you will be sent a part to complete the repair.  The part will be mailed to the shipping address supplied on your payment of these instructions.  It typically takes 3-5 business days to arrive via First Class US Postal Service.  The part is key to completing your repair in 8 minutes as shown in the video

These instructions include an 8 minute video that shows you the entire process...yes, it can be done in 8 minutes...but give yourself some extra time.

What People are Saying Regarding this Ford Door Lock Repair:

This is Why We Are Called "ANYONE Can Fix It"...
Holy smokes ... If I didn't do it myself, then I wouldn't have believed it. The thing that took me the longest was actually getting the door open so that I could take the panel off in the first place....Thanks again! I also replaced the console cover (see www.FixYourFord.com) -- my wife was looking at me sideways as I had the cover on the table, and then I showed it to her after I was done.

Duane,
I never thought this would work, but thought I would give it a try. I had it fixed in 30 minutes while my 11 month old was taking a nap. Thanks again, you probably saved me 300-500 bucks if I had taken it to a Ford dealership.
